The Central Bank of the Philippines joined the Department of Transportation, the Light Rail Transit Authority and Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation in launching the Light Rail Transit 2 digital fare payments proof-of-concept at Legarda Station. The pilot lets commuters pay fares using most debit, credit and prepaid cards, near-field communication-compatible mobile wallets and devices including Google Pay, and GCash Commute QR codes. It also allows about 700,000 My SSS cardholders to use their cards for LRT-2 fares, replacing cash or traditional ticket purchases with tap or scan payments. The LRT-2 rollout extends digital fare payments already introduced on Metro Rail Transit-3 and through QR-based payments on the EDSA Busway. In practical terms, the initiative broadens payment choice for commuters and expands the use of digital payments in everyday transport transactions as part of the public transport network. More transport services are planned for integration into the Department of Transportation's Automated Fare Collection System project.
