The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs published a statement from ranking member Elizabeth Warren and four other Democratic lawmakers urging President Donald Trump to use existing sanctions powers immediately against entities supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. They argued that Congress does not need to grant additional tariff authority for the administration to target companies, individuals and vessels involved in Russia’s war effort. The lawmakers called for sanctions against actors operating in or supporting 17 sectors of the Russian economy. Citing open-source reports, they identified activity facilitating Russia’s procurement of critical goods and technology, alternative payment mechanisms, war-related revenue and human rights abuses, including efforts to circumvent existing U.S. sanctions.
