The National Bank of Georgia reported that the Law on Microfinance Organizations has been amended to raise the maximum limit for microcredits issued by microfinance organizations to GEL 200,000 from GEL 100,000. The amendments also authorise the National Bank of Georgia to set additional microcredit requirements for microfinance organizations through a normative act. The changes are positioned as supporting access to finance for small and medium-sized businesses while enabling the central bank to introduce requirements aimed at protecting the microfinance sector from excessive risks. Parliament of Georgia has approved the amendments in the third reading, with the draft prepared by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and the National Bank of Georgia and initiated by the Government of Georgia.
