The International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) has launched the Protection Gaps Library of Initiatives, an online resource offering practical examples for addressing uninsured losses from natural catastrophes. The freely accessible library helps supervisors and policymakers assess protection gaps and identify approaches suited to their jurisdictions, with an initial focus on gap assessment and public-private insurance programmes. The launch builds on the IAIS’ call to action and joint work with the World Bank, including their 2025 contribution to the G20 agenda on natural catastrophe insurance protection gaps. It connects that policy work with initiatives and case studies from jurisdictions around the world. Protection gaps represent the uninsured portion of economic losses from natural catastrophes and can impede recovery and strain public finances. Addressing them requires coordinated action by governments, supervisors, insurers and other stakeholders. The IAIS will progressively expand the library to include parametric insurance and other innovative solutions, incentives for risk reduction, financial literacy and risk awareness. Lessons from the initiatives and case studies will underpin further guidance for supervisors and policymakers.
