The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has alerted the public to scam reports linked to press releases from three banks concerning fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens and related phishing activity. The cases reported to the HKMA involve The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited and Chong Hing Bank Limited. The HKMA reiterated that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. Anyone who has provided personal information or carried out financial transactions in response to these scams is advised to contact the relevant bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
