The Bank of Israel reported that nonfinancial private sector debt increased by about 3.6% in the second quarter of 2026 to approximately NIS 2.6 trillion, reflecting continued growth in both business and household borrowing. Business sector debt rose by NIS 67 billion, or 4.2%, to about NIS 1.7 trillion, driven mainly by bank credit. Its annual growth rate accelerated to 13.8%, continuing an upward trend that began in the second half of 2024. Businesses issued about NIS 33 billion of bonds during the quarter, above the NIS 23 billion average for the previous four quarters, with real estate and construction companies accounting for 52% of issuance. Household debt increased by NIS 22 billion, or 2.4%, to about NIS 935 billion. Nonhousing debt grew 3.6% to NIS 260 billion, lifting its annual growth rate to about 10%, while housing debt rose 1.9% to NIS 675 billion as seasonally adjusted new mortgage borrowing totaled about NIS 29 billion.
