The Central Bank of Liberia, as lead convener of the National Non-Performing Loans Resolution Conference, reported a broad consensus that Liberia must address elevated nonperforming loans through coordinated action across government, financial institutions, the judiciary, borrowers and development partners. Participants identified the issue as a national economic priority because it constrains access to finance and credit intermediation, raises borrowing costs and weakens financial sector resilience. The conference agreed that the response should strengthen credit discipline and legal certainty, modernize financial infrastructure, improve debt recovery mechanisms and support the rehabilitation of viable enterprises. The event, held in Monrovia from Sept. 9-11, brought together public authorities, financial institutions and other stakeholders, with World Bank support.
