The Austrian Ministry of Finance reported that the Financial Police identified 39 suspected violations during targeted inspections of the hotel cleaning sector on Sept. 30. A total of 119 officers inspected 28 businesses and 128 workers at hotels across Vienna, Tyrol, Upper Austria, Carinthia and Styria, alongside a German operation targeting an alleged cross-border criminal group linked to illegal employment and labor exploitation. The findings comprised 26 alleged breaches of working time law, seven of social insurance law, five of foreign employment law and one of the Social Fraud Prevention Act. Four businesses are suspected of being sham companies, including two already under investigation, while local Financial Police teams are investigating indications identified at the other two. Officers also garnished about EUR 323,000 for tax debts and arrested one person believed to be residing illegally in Austria. The suspected offenses remain under investigation and have not received a final legal assessment.
