The Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM) has launched SSDS+, a platform for issuing, depositing and safekeeping tokenised bonds and sukuk. Integrated with RENTAS+, it supports payment and settlement around the clock. SSDS+ manages securities transfers and ownership records, while RENTAS+ handles the corresponding payments for bond purchases in central bank money. Developed in-house using cloud and distributed ledger technologies, SSDS+ builds on the existing Scripless Securities Depository System, the central securities depository for Malaysia’s wholesale financial market. Beyond wholesale issuances, the platform is ready to support tokenised government and retail bonds. Digital representation of securities can simplify transactions, allow more flexible instrument design and broaden investment access. The launch follows BNM’s October 2025 discussion paper exploring an approach to asset tokenisation and seeking input to inform its regulatory and development framework.
