The Anti-Money Laundering Intelligence Office of the Bank of the Lao is holding a Sept. 1-3 briefing for public authorities and reporting entities on rules covering anti-money laundering, counterterrorist financing and counterproliferation financing. The meeting also seeks views on a draft decree governing provisional measures and the seizure, freezing and confiscation of funds or assets linked to money laundering or terrorist financing. The briefing covers existing decrees on institutional responsibilities, asset restrictions involving listed persons linked to terrorism, counterproliferation financing and penalties for regulatory breaches. More than 300 participants include commercial banks, relevant government officials and representatives from Vientiane Capital and surrounding provinces. The initiative is intended to strengthen implementation and address AML and counterterrorist financing deficiencies associated with Laos’ placement on the monitoring list known as the grey list.
