The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public scam alert following reports to the HKMA of fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails and other scams linked to press releases by three banks. The affected banks are The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited and Chong Hing Bank Limited, with reported scams involving fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens. The HKMA reiterated that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, nor will they request sensitive information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS. The HKMA advised anyone who has provided personal information or conducted financial transactions in response to these scams to contact the relevant bank using the details in the corresponding bank press release and to report the matter to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
