Bank Indonesia used the 2026 Indonesia Sovereign Rupiah Festival to emphasize the Rupiah’s role as both legal tender and the unit of value in the digital payment ecosystem. Deputy Governor Ricky P. Gozali reiterated the central bank’s focus on maintaining the currency’s quality, public confidence and availability across Indonesia amid the growth of digital payments. The festival, held from Aug. 14 to 16, highlights currency integrity, Rupiah literacy and modern, environmentally sustainable currency management. Bank Indonesia also recognized partners in its shredded banknote waste program, which works with industries and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to reuse the waste for energy or recyclable products with economic value.
