The National Bank of Romania has issued an alert that a document circulating online, dated 3 November 2025 and bearing the central bank’s logo, is fake. The bank stated it did not issue, sign or approve the material and does not have legal powers to issue warnings relating to notarial acts or powers of attorney. Although the document uses real names of National Bank of Romania structures and staff, including the Digital Platforms and Cybersecurity Directorate, and reproduces the institution’s logo, letterhead and genuine contact details, these elements were used without the bank’s consent to mislead the public. The central bank reiterated that its official communications are published only via its website and official communication channels, and that any document attributed to it outside these channels should be treated with maximum caution. The National Bank of Romania has notified competent authorities to investigate the attempted disinformation and advised the public not to act on, sign or redistribute the forged document. It also noted that reproducing or distributing false documents issued in its name may constitute criminal forgery and use-of-forgery offenses under the Penal Code.
