The National Bank of Moldova held an event on the development of instant payments in Moldova, bringing together payment service providers, financial institutions and experts to discuss adoption, trust and ecosystem priorities, and to take stock of progress in the MIA Instant Payments system, including its recent expansion to business-to-business transfers. Discussions covered international and local developments, the market impact of MIA, the regulatory framework, and priorities around user experience, financial inclusion and increasing merchant acceptance. The central bank reported that MIA, launched in 2024, is used by more than 900,000 users (around half of the adult population), is available at over 18,000 points of sale nationwide, and in 2025 processed around 15 million payments worth MDL 13.2 billion; First Deputy Governor Petru Rotaru stressed that uptake depends on joint delivery by the central bank and payment service providers of a simple, intuitive user experience. The event was positioned as part of a broader set of initiatives to support financial inclusion and align Moldova’s digital payment services with European standards, using structured dialogue to support cooperation across the ecosystem.
