The Bank of Albania published Governor Gent Sejko’s address launching Global Money Week 2025 (17–23 March), focusing on financial education for young people and the need to critically assess financial information in an environment shaped by social media and fast-moving technology. In outlining the central bank’s role in modern financial infrastructure, the Governor highlighted the evolution of Albania’s payment systems, including the Albanian Interbank Payment System (AIPS), which now processes a total payment volume of around five times gross domestic product. He also pointed to the Albanian Electronic Clearing House (AECH) and AIPS EURO, and linked Bank of Albania policies on regulating payment commissions to estimated savings of around ALL 700 million since 2020 from eliminating fees on payments up to ALL 20,000, plus estimated savings of around EUR 100 million from operating AIPS EURO. The address also noted that an instant payments project has begun in collaboration with the Bank of Italy and the central banks of the Western Balkans, with the aim of enabling simple mobile-phone payments and supporting wider adoption of innovative financial services.
