The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public scam alert after banks reported fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails and other scams to the HKMA, and provided links to the banks’ related press releases on its website. The alert covers fraudulent website and internet banking login screen scams associated with The Bank of East Asia, Limited, Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited, and Chong Hing Bank Limited. The HKMA reiterated that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded links. Individuals who have provided personal information or conducted transactions in response to the scams were advised to contact the relevant bank using details in the corresponding press release and report the matter to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
