The Central Bank of Cuba published an overview of the security features of the new CUP 2,000 and CUP 5,000 banknotes, whose distribution through bank branches has increased in recent weeks. The notes depart from the design and technical characteristics of existing Cuban currency and are the first national banknotes to feature female Cuban patriots, with Mariana Grajales Cuello on the CUP 2,000 note and Celia Sánchez Manduley on the CUP 5,000 note. Both denominations use international-standard banknote security paper and incorporate a portrait watermark with a denomination electrotype, a vertical security thread with a movement effect, raised printing and a national flower motif with a rainbow effect when viewed from different angles. The notes measure 150 by 70 millimeters, with violet and pink predominant on the CUP 2,000 note and blue on the CUP 5,000 note. Anyone uncertain about a banknote’s authenticity is advised to seek verification at a bank branch.
