The Bank of Greece reported that Governor Yannis Stournaras met in Athens with Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification, to discuss international economic developments and the outlook for Europe, the euro area and Greece, including the international role of the euro and the ongoing digital euro project. In post-meeting remarks, Stournaras framed current international upheavals as a prompt to accelerate European integration and improve coordination of common policies, focusing on reducing fragmentation across goods, services and capital markets, supporting innovation and investment, and advancing financial and fiscal deepening, including progress toward a Banking Union, Fiscal Union, and Savings and Investments Union. Dombrovskis said the European Commission expects Greece to maintain growth momentum in 2026 despite external headwinds, largely due to Greece’s RRP, while noting that the forecast could still change and calling for prudent fiscal policy and vigilance.
