The European Central Bank reported that the euro area’s current account surplus increased to EUR 35 billion in June 2026 from EUR 26 billion in May. Surpluses in goods, primary income and services were partly offset by a secondary income deficit. Over the 12 months to June, the current account surplus narrowed to EUR 276 billion, or 1.7% of euro area gross domestic product, from EUR 305 billion, or 2.0%, a year earlier. The decline mainly reflected a smaller goods surplus and a larger secondary income deficit. Euro area residents acquired EUR 820 billion of non-euro area portfolio securities, while non-residents acquired EUR 1.123 trillion of euro area portfolio securities. The Eurosystem’s reserve assets fell to EUR 1.755 trillion in June, mainly because lower monetary gold prices generated negative price changes of EUR 123.5 billion.
