The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have jointly appointed Professor Atif Mian as the MAS Distinguished Term Professor in Economics and Finance for 2 to 17 January 2025, hosted by NUS Business School’s Department of Real Estate and MAS’s Economic Policy Group. Professor Mian is a professor at Princeton University and directs the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance. His research focuses on leverage, credit cycles and financial fragility, including the role of household debt and inequality in macroeconomic outcomes. During the term, he will deliver a public lecture at NUS on 14 January 2025 on inequality, financialisation, debt-dependence and a debt super-cycle, hold dialogue sessions with NUS faculty, and engage MAS senior policymakers and economists on international finance and monetary policy. MAS noted that the Term Professorship scheme, established in 2009, has been awarded to 23 scholars over the past 15 years, and that MAS extended the partnership with NUS for another five years in December 2024.
