The Central Bank of Costa Rica has released new datasets on household distributive national accounts, globalization indicators and cantonal gross domestic product (GDP) via its economic indicators portal, prepared as part of the 2022 base-year revision and the implementation of recommendations from the System of National Accounts 2025. The household distributive accounts cover the distribution of income, consumption and saving, including primary, disposable and adjusted disposable income, final consumption expenditure, effective consumption and saving. For 2022, the top 20% of households by income accounted for 54.2% of disposable income and 42.9% of total household consumption, with a 24.9% saving rate versus a 5.3% national average; for the bottom 20%, government-provided education and health services represented 44.9% of adjusted disposable income. The data show greater inequality in income (Gini 0.53) than in consumption (0.45). Globalization indicators quantify real and financial integration, with 2022 ratios to GDP including direct investment of 6.7% and a current account balance of 4.3%; foreign-owned enterprises reinvested profits equivalent to 3.7% of GDP and generated 27.6% of gross value added. Cantonal GDP results show that 58.1% of Costa Rica’s 2022 GDP was concentrated in 10 cantons: San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Santa Ana, Belén, Escazú, Cartago, Montes de Oca, San Carlos and Goicoechea.
