Estonia's Ministry of Finance reported that the Government has reappointed Matis Mäeker as head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (Rahapesu Andmebüroo) for a new five-year term running from 14 June 2026 to 13 June 2031. The decision followed an open competition organised under the Public Service Act by the Top Executives Selection Commission, which found Mäeker meets the role’s requirements and has the necessary experience and competence. Mäeker has led the Financial Intelligence Unit since 2021, including work to reorganise the market for high-risk virtual currency service providers and contributing to a positive outcome in the MONEYVAL international assessment; he is also a member of the Financial Intelligence Units’ umbrella organisation’s highest decision-making body and sits on the management board of the EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA).
