Nigeria’s National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) hosted an engagement in Lagos between Nigerian insurance and marine-sector stakeholders and the Ghana Cargo Technical Committee on a study tour, focused on exchanging operational experience on marine cargo insurance and exploring areas for collaboration. The session brought together Nigerian representatives including the Nigerian Insurers Association, the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Port Authority, the Nigerian Shippers Council and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, alongside Ghanaian participants from the National Insurance Commission, Ghana Insurance Association, Ghana Shippers Association, Ghana Revenue Authority and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Discussion covered the technicalities of marine cargo insurance in Nigeria, including the role of port operators and the Marine Offices Committee, the reliance of insurers on port safety and handling standards, the role of brokers in explaining policy terms and claims processes, and the Nigeria Customs Service’s description of cargo insurance cover from transit to delivery under an Act of 2023; Ghana’s delegation said the insights would support implementation of Ghana’s new marine insurance policy.
