The National Bank of Denmark announced that DKK 1,000 banknotes and banknotes from the 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997 series can be exchanged only until 31 May 2026, after which they will be worthless. These notes have been invalid as a means of payment since 31 May 2025, and after the deadline only banknotes from the current 2009 series will have value and remain valid in Denmark and Greenland. Exchange is available at the National Bank of Denmark’s three banknote exchange points operated by FOREX in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen, and requires physical presence, a written declaration and valid photo identification for individuals and companies, Danish or foreign. Since exchanges began on 30 November 2023, DKK 21.1 billion has been redeemed; since the start of 2026, the exchange points have processed 9,257 exchanges totalling DKK 46 million, with DKK 3.3 billion still outstanding. In Greenland and the Faroe Islands, the banknotes can also be exchanged at local banks up to the end of May 2026.

The National Bank of Denmark reiterated that DKK 1,000 banknotes and notes from the 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997 series can only be exchanged until 31 May 2026, after which they will be worthless, with only the 2009 series remaining valid in Denmark and Greenland. Exchanges must be conducted in person at the National Bank of Denmark’s three FOREX-operated exchange points or at local banks in Greenland and the Faroe Islands, with written declaration and valid photo identification required.
