The Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (Finansinspektionen) has issued a consumer warning that fraudsters are using artificial intelligence to create deepfake voices and videos to make investment scams appear credible, and has launched an information campaign to help the public recognise and resist these approaches. The warning highlights how AI-enabled impersonation can mimic family members, celebrities or supposed experts and be combined with fake websites, fabricated customer reviews and professional-looking contacts, typically alongside time pressure and “limited” offers intended to force quick decisions. Finansinspektionen points to its survey findings that six in ten Swedes worry about AI being used in fraud, while the European supervisory authorities EBA, EIOPA and ESMA are seeing a clear increase in scams that use AI to fake people and organisations. Practical guidance includes independently verifying claims via trusted sources or official numbers, checking whether a firm is authorised via Finansinspektionen’s company register, being sceptical of promises of high and fast returns, never sharing codes or login and card details, pausing when pressured to act immediately, and setting family routines such as double-checks for larger payments and agreed code words for genuine emergencies. The campaign encourages consumers to “take the AI talk” with family and friends and is accompanied by related materials, including a video and a factsheet from the European supervisory authorities on protecting against AI-enabled fraud.
