The Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) has changed the information shown in company extracts purchased through the ASIC website so that they no longer display the residential addresses of company officeholders. ASIC implemented the change in response to privacy and safety concerns, including easier access to personal information and increased risks of identity theft and cyber-crime. Residential address information is not being removed entirely from ASIC registers, but access is being restricted at the most widely used purchase channel; law enforcement agencies, government departments and parties needing address details for regulatory compliance and business purposes will continue to be able to access the information. ASIC will engage registry intermediaries on the impact and monitor implementation for effects on users. The update sits alongside ASIC’s RegistryConnect program, which is intended to strengthen registry data quality and integrity, including through future linking of director IDs to the companies register and stronger user validation and authentication. A Treasury consultation on draft laws to improve Australia’s business registers is open until 10 February 2026, with ASIC indicating it will continue to engage with Treasury on future work affecting ASIC registers.
