The Central Bank of Honduras has announced the release into circulation of a redesigned HNL 200 banknote featuring national heroine and environmental defender Bertha Isabel Cáceres Flores, timed with the country’s 25 January Women’s Day commemorations. The new edition was issued under a legislative decree and approved by the Central Bank’s board, and will circulate in parallel with the HNL 200 design launched in 2021, with both remaining valid at face value. The banknote’s design includes Cáceres’s portrait alongside motifs linked to her legacy, including the Gualcarque River and Lenca cultural elements, plus an ultraviolet feature referencing her 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize; the reverse depicts a panoramic view of La Esperanza, Intibucá and includes a quote attributed to her. The banknote includes security features such as a watermark, dynamic security thread, colour-shifting ink, a see-through register, fluorescent ink and security fibres. Production was carried out by Crane Currency Malta Limited, which printed and supplied 20 million notes. The Central Bank said the rollout will be gradual under its monetary programme, replacing other notes across denominations, and it does not expect inflationary effects from the issuance.
