The South African Reserve Bank published its template on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity for end-August 2025, covering the short-term foreign currency assets and liabilities of the South African Reserve Bank and South Africa’s central government. Official reserve assets were reported at approximately USD 70.416bn. Foreign currency reserves totalled USD 49.671bn, comprising USD 35.286bn in securities and USD 14.385bn in deposits with other central banks, the Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund. Predetermined net drains within one year included central government foreign-currency principal outflows of USD 4.039bn and interest outflows of USD 1.734bn, while forwards and futures showed net long positions of USD 537m (net short positions of USD 2m); contingent liabilities within one year included other contingent liabilities of USD 1.044bn. The template also disclosed a currency composition split of USD 67.014bn in SDR-basket currencies including gold and USD 3.402bn in non-SDR-basket currencies, and noted that foreign-currency reserves placed with fund managers have been classified as securities since January 2013.
