The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public scam alert after receiving reports from banks about fraudulent websites, fake internet banking login screens, phishing emails and other scams, and linked to the banks’ own press releases on the HKMA website. The alert covers The Bank of East Asia, Shanghai Commercial Bank, Chong Hing Bank, Chiyu Banking Corporation, OCBC Bank (Hong Kong), Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong), China CITIC Bank International and Bank of Communications (Hong Kong). HKMA reiterated that banks do not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and do not request sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. HKMA advised anyone who has provided personal information or carried out transactions in response to the scams to contact the relevant bank using details in the corresponding bank press release and to report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
