The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) has outlined its role in overseeing universal health insurance following its participation in the national launch of the program’s second phase in Mtwara on Sept. 22, 2026. Speaking at the event, Tanzania’s Insurance Commissioner, Dr. Baghayo Saqware, affirmed TIRA’s readiness to implement the Universal Health Insurance Act and oversee the protection of members’ rights and the entitlements of service providers and health facilities. TIRA’s participation also focused on public education about health insurance, including its role in accessing treatment and protecting households against unexpected medical costs. This is consistent with its previously stated emphasis on consumer protection and wider insurance access. Participants could register for universal health insurance through the National Health Insurance Fund’s booth at the event.
