At the Tbilisi Financial Summit, National Bank of Georgia Vice President Ekaterine Galdava reiterated that improving international payments requires interoperable infrastructure, common standards and cooperation between regulators, not just new technology. This emphasis echoes the bank’s previously outlined approach of modernizing domestic payment infrastructure before strengthening regional links. Its settlement and clearing systems based on ISO 20022 began operating in May 2026. The panel examined the potential use of stablecoins in international payments, alongside traditional payment technologies, and the associated regulatory challenges. Galdava also reviewed the bank’s ongoing work to modernize existing infrastructure and introduce new payment systems and services, including its assessment of innovative technologies and their risks.
