Thailand’s Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) has detailed proposals from an Oct. 21, 2026, forum to strengthen local crash prevention and advance its goal of 100% compulsory motor insurance coverage. The discussion builds on an existing road safety initiative developed from a Prachin Buri pilot and covering six communities in four provinces, combining accident prevention with insurance protection for victims. The forum examined how accident and compulsory insurance claims data in the e-Claim system could help identify dangerous locations and guide road improvements. Local representatives identified fragmented responsibility for roads as an obstacle to addressing hazards. Proposed responses included using provincial and district road safety centers to coordinate the responsible agencies and providing smaller local authorities with access to traffic engineering expertise. Participants also suggested publishing danger spots and speed restrictions through navigation services such as Google Maps. To address lapses in compulsory insurance, participants proposed community checks for motorcycles with expired cover, automatic renewal reminders and longer periods of cover arranged with motorcycle manufacturers and leasing businesses. The insurance packages would seek to prevent coverage lapsing after the first year. Other suggestions included premium discounts for motorcycles equipped with antilock braking systems and provincial indicators tracking insurance renewal alongside vehicle registration, driving licenses and compliance with speed limits.
