The Ghana National Insurance Commission, working with the Secretariat of the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance, convened Africa’s first Sustainability Insurance Conference in Accra to drive integration of sustainability and climate resilience into insurance practices across the continent. Held over three days under the theme “Building a New Sustainability Culture for Africa’s Insurance Markets,” the conference brought together insurers, policymakers, and regulators to discuss sustainable underwriting, climate risk mitigation, and the role of products such as agricultural and parametric insurance. A statement delivered on behalf of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson highlighted government support for green financing and sustainable risk management, including developing insurance solutions for climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture and renewable energy. Acting Commissioner of Insurance Dr. Abiba Zakariah called on African regulators to embed Environmental, Social and Governance principles, move beyond conventional compliance approaches, and incorporate climate risk disclosures into regulatory frameworks. The event closed with a call for stakeholders to move from discussion to implementation of sustainable policies that strengthen the insurance sector’s contribution to economic and environmental resilience.
