In a speech at the workshop “Technical and Legal Aspects of Joining SEPA Payment Schemes”, National Bank of Serbia Governor Jorgovanka Tabaković announced that Serbia has become part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) after its application was officially accepted, framing the move as a new stage of integration with the European Union and participation in cross-border payments under common European standards. The Governor described accession as the outcome of a reform process that aligned Serbia’s payment services framework with European Union requirements, including implementation of provisions of the Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) and supporting bylaws, alongside strengthened supervisory capacity and cooperation with the banking and fintech sectors. She also highlighted the National Bank’s real-time instant payments system, IPS NBS, which supports over five million transactions per month, and noted that all payment service providers in Serbia are entering a new phase of responsibility and opportunity within SEPA.
