Payments Canada has published the Real-Time Rail By-law in Canada Gazette Part II, completing the approvals needed for the core legal framework of Canada's Real-Time Rail. The RTR By-law and RTR Rules will come into force on Aug. 24, 2026, and together set the legal basis for the system's safety, efficiency and operational resilience ahead of the RTR launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. The framework was developed through public consultations in 2020 and 2025, educational webinars and broader industry engagement. Payments Canada said the new national payment infrastructure will support instant, data-rich payments in Canada on a 24/7, 365-day basis. The next stated step is the RTR launch in Q4 2026, following the commencement of the by-law and rules in August.
