The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved USD 30 million in new grants for Yemen to strengthen digital financial infrastructure and sustain access to basic education in the most disadvantaged areas through two new operations. A USD 20 million grant will finance the Yemen Financial Market Infrastructure and Inclusion Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, to develop digital payments systems including a Fast Payment System and a Real Time Gross Settlement System under the Central Bank in Aden. The project also targets interoperability among financial institutions, stronger compliance with anti-money laundering regulations, expanded access points for digital financial services in underserved areas, and digitization of cash transfers, government payments, and remittances. A USD 10 million grant will support the Sustaining Education and Learning Project, implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund, to keep schools open in targeted vulnerable districts through rehabilitation of school infrastructure, construction of classrooms and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, community-managed school grants for operational needs, strengthened education data systems, and local planning and monitoring capacity, with a focus on improving girls’ access to education in rural areas.
