The Philippines Insurance Commission, in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (UNDP IRFF) and CARD Mutual Benefit Association (CARD MBA), hosted a peer-to-peer learning exchange on microinsurance distribution, focused on the Philippines’ use of the mutual benefit association (MBA) model. The three-day programme brought together insurance regulators and stakeholders from Bangladesh, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines to discuss the potential of mutuals models in expanding microinsurance coverage and the Philippine regulatory measures that support MBA growth. It included field visits to Pioneer Insurance & Surety Corporation in Makati City and to CARD MBA in San Pablo City, Laguna, covering operations and governance; CARD MBA was described as the country’s largest microinsurance provider, serving over 7 million clients with health, life and property cover and micro-savings products. UNDP’s keynote speaker stated that, through UNDP IRFF, it will continue working with governments and partners to strengthen policy environments, promote inclusive insurance and facilitate knowledge-sharing.
