De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) published a speech by Governor Klaas Knot to mark the award of high-ranking BREEAM and WELL certifications for sustainability and wellbeing at its newly renovated headquarters in Amsterdam. Knot framed the outcome as evidence that sustainable construction in the Netherlands can be achievable and cost-conscious, and linked the renovation to DNB’s longer-standing approach of incorporating sustainability into its mission and core tasks. The speech highlighted an estimated 80% reduction in energy use from the renovation, alongside decisions presented as balancing sustainability with prudent spending of public funds. Knot pointed to rigorous asbestos removal that extended the timeline, and described efforts to reuse the dismantled “Satellite” building, with the modules ultimately set to be repurposed as an entertainment venue on the Scheveningen Pier after a proposed nursing home project proved too complex. On wellbeing and openness, he referenced measures such as improved indoor environment and design choices to encourage movement, and said relocating gold and banknotes to a new Cash Center in Zeist enabled the headquarters to open more fully to the public, including through visitor access to De Nieuwe Schatkamer.
