The Bank of Cape Verde announced that it will put into circulation new CVE 1,000 and CVE 2,000 banknotes under Decree-Law No. 02/2025, maintaining the 2014 banknote family design themes while updating features to strengthen stock and incorporate technological advances to improve security, durability and public verification. The CVE 1,000 note continues to highlight Funaná and features a front portrait of Codé di Dona, the outline of Santiago island, and a holographic band with pano di terra motifs including “1000”, an accordion and a dove, alongside a musical note and full-height microtext “FUNANÁ1000” replacing the original microtext. The reverse emphasises elements linked to Santiago’s rural origins of Funaná, with tick leaves and doves appearing in green and red under ultraviolet light. The CVE 2,000 note continues to highlight Morna, adds a youthful photo of Cesária Évora to brighten the front composition, and introduces full-height microtext “MORNA2000” on the front and on the reverse before the watermark, replacing the original microtext. The new CVE 1,000 and CVE 2,000 notes will circulate alongside the existing notes, with both versions retaining legal tender status and required acceptance as payment. Distribution to the public will be conducted through credit institutions.
