The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) announced that the Minister of Finance has appointed Dr Anna Breman as Governor for a five-year term starting 1 December 2025. Incumbent Governor Christian Hawkesby will remain in the role until Dr Breman takes office. RBNZ Board Deputy Chair Rodger Finlay said the appointment followed a recruitment process in which 300 individuals were identified, contacted or interviewed. The Board highlighted Dr Breman’s experience across central banking, academia and financial markets, including service on the Executive Board of Sveriges Riksbank, with technical expertise spanning monetary policy, financial stability and payments. Mr Hawkesby’s term will be extended to 30 November 2025 to support a transition, after which he will depart RBNZ. He indicated his remaining priorities include completing organisational changes, concluding the capital review of the deposit-taking sector, chairing the Monetary Policy Committee, delivering the Financial Stability Report, and leading remaining parliamentary hearings.
