In a speech at the inaugural roundtable of the SEC’s Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity series, Commissioner Hester M. Peirce framed the event as the start of a “restart” of the Commission’s approach to crypto regulation and part of the work catalysed by the Crypto Task Force formed two months earlier. The roundtable series is intended to explore crypto regulatory issues collaboratively, starting with foundational questions about when a crypto asset is a security and how that status should be assessed. Topics flagged for the first session included what makes something a security, whether an asset’s status can change over time, how decentralization affects the analysis, and whether the relevant characteristics can be translated into a taxonomy that can accommodate different types of crypto assets. The session was moderated by former SEC Commissioner Troy Paredes.
