The Central Bank of Ecuador released the main results of its Bioeconomy Thematic Account, a statistical tool designed to quantify the bioeconomy’s overall contribution to gross domestic product and assess its role within the national production system. The results show the bioeconomy moved broadly in line with the wider economy, contracting by 0.6% in 2024 alongside a 1.8% decline in GDP, in a context shaped by the energy crisis. Despite the downturn, the bioeconomy is described as maintaining an important position in Ecuador’s productive structure, with high levels of domestic self-sufficiency and a growing export orientation. The Central Bank links this performance to the strengthening of traditional sectors such as agriculture and agroindustry, as well as growth in industries that use biological resources, and highlighted the Bioeconomy Thematic Account as a basis for more evidence-driven decision-making, including in remarks delivered at the closing of a bioeconomy technical assistance fund led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy with support from partner institutions.
