The Central Bank of Oman announced the issuance of a one rial polymer commemorative banknote, the first polymer note in the history of Omani currency, and said it will enter circulation from 11 January 2026. The note will circulate alongside existing banknotes and remains legal tender at face value for all transactions. The 145x76 mm commemorative note is printed on polymer rather than the current cotton substrate and includes durability and security features. Design elements include the Oman Botanic Garden on the front and the Sayyid Tarik bin Taimour Cultural Complex, Duqm Port and Duqm Refinery on the reverse, alongside security features such as a large transparent window, optically variable ink, and iridescent ink. In addition to circulation, the Central Bank of Oman said 1,000 uncut sheets and 10,000 banknotes in designed envelopes will be available for sale from 11 January 2026 at the Central Bank of Oman (Ruwi, Salalah and Sohar) and at Oman Post’s sales window at the Opera Galleria.
