Greece's Ministry of National Economy and Finance announced that Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, in his capacity as President of the Eurogroup, is in Brussels for the Eurogroup and ECOFIN meetings, with discussions framed around strengthening the international role of the euro and European monetary sovereignty. The Eurogroup is set to focus on economic policy directions for 2026, including a contribution from Professor Hélène Rey, Chair of the G7 Independent Academic Expert Group on Global Imbalances, and participation by Canada’s Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne at Pierrakakis’ invitation. ECOFIN will take up structural reform priorities, notably supplementary pensions and the revision of the Occupational Pension Funds Directive within the Savings and Investment Union, alongside files on deepening the single market, accelerating the digital euro, EU Budget 2027 guidelines, and the Eurozone 2026 economic policy recommendation under the European Semester, as well as the economic impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility. The delegation includes Deputy Minister of Finance Thanos Petralias, who represents Greece in the body’s meetings, and bilateral contacts with European counterparts are also planned.
