Democratic members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, led by Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren, sent a letter to Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte seeking information, documents and communications about the agency’s role in purported mortgage fraud investigations involving New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. The lawmakers said they are concerned the FHFA is being used to target President Donald Trump’s perceived political opponents rather than focusing on housing affordability. The request was joined by Democratic ranking members of other Senate committees, including Richard Durbin, Ron Wyden, Gary Peters, Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse. The letter questions whether similar scrutiny has been applied to allegations involving Republican officials, citing Director Pulte’s refusal in an interview to comment on investigating Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and raising questions about potential investigations involving Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The senators asked Director Pulte to provide the requested materials by October 8, 2025.
