The South African Reserve Bank published its statement of assets and liabilities as at 28 February 2025, reporting total assets of ZAR 1,276,261,971,173 (and the same total for equity and liabilities), down ZAR 4,911,302,137 from end-January 2025. Gold and foreign assets remained the dominant component at ZAR 1,223,441,712,273, decreasing ZAR 3,833,627,409 over the month. Within foreign assets, foreign exchange reserves excluding special drawing rights (SDRs) fell ZAR 5,969,780,391 to ZAR 895,280,457,831, while SDR holdings declined ZAR 213,865,191 to ZAR 115,007,616,218; the gold position increased ZAR 2,350,018,173 to ZAR 213,153,638,224. On the liabilities side, notes and coin in circulation decreased ZAR 539,393,005 to ZAR 167,139,302,405, deposits from banks fell ZAR 17,367,469,124 to ZAR 317,041,835,249, and “other” deposits rose ZAR 18,195,071,647 to ZAR 69,328,618,565; the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account declined ZAR 4,600,488,604 to ZAR 347,739,234,562. The reported rand price per fine ounce increased to ZAR 52,844.92, and gold holdings were 4,033,569 fine ounces.
