The National Bank of Moldova, in partnership with the International Finance Corporation, held an online capacity-building session on the basics of sustainable finance taxonomies for members of the Sustainable Financing Consultative Group, focusing on how green taxonomies work and how they support market transparency. The session brought together representatives from the National Bank of Moldova, the National Commission for Financial Market, several line ministries, and the Association of Banks of Moldova. It covered the structure and role of the European Union Taxonomy within the EU sustainable finance action plan and its interaction with sustainability-related rules, including corporate ESG reporting and financial-sector requirements, and introduced Moldova’s sustainable finance taxonomy, including core concepts and technical screening criteria for assessing over 150 economic activities. Discussions highlighted the taxonomy’s role in mitigating greenwashing and improving transparency for environmental, social and governance products, including in relation to objectives such as biodiversity protection, water quality, and pollution prevention. The session forms part of a one-year capacity-building programme established by the National Bank of Moldova and IFC under the central bank’s sustainable finance roadmap, which is aligned with international standards and developments in European Union regulation.
