The Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority has issued an alert that fraudsters are currently sending consumers SMS messages that appear to come from the authority, including claims that an investigation into financial information has been opened. The authority emphasised that it never contacts consumers in this way. Consumers were advised to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages, and not call numbers provided in the SMS. Suspicious “bluff” messages can be forwarded to 7726 so Swedish telecom operators can identify and help block further distribution, and suspected investment fraud should be reported to the police. The authority also pointed to its warning list, its company register of firms authorised to operate in Sweden, and the International Organization of Securities Commissions’ I-scan database as additional tools for checking for fraud.
