The Central Bank of Malta announced that Malta’s President, acting on the advice of the Cabinet of Ministers, has appointed Alexander Demarco as Governor for a five-year term starting 1 January 2026. His appointment was unanimously approved by the Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee. Demarco has been Deputy Governor since 1 January 2014, initially responsible for Financial Stability and serving as a member of the European Central Bank’s Supervisory Board within the Single Supervisory Mechanism. Since August 2017 he has been Deputy Governor responsible for Monetary Policy, accompanying and acting as alternate to the Governor at ECB Monetary Policy Governing Council meetings. He also served as Acting Governor from 1 August 2024 to 31 July 2025, participating as a voting member of the ECB’s Governing Council and chairing the Joint Financial Stability Board.
