The British Columbia Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) convened its 2025 Financial Services Sector Forum on 13 November in Vancouver, bringing together industry participants, regulators and policy experts to discuss how major economic, technological and policy changes are affecting British Columbia’s financial services sector. BCFSA CEO Tolga Yalkin used the opening remarks to underline a shared responsibility between the regulator and industry to foster confidence in the sector, and BCFSA published the full text of his speech. The programme included remarks from British Columbia’s Minister of Finance Brenda Bailey and a keynote from former Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz on geopolitical tensions, technological change and other shifts reshaping the global economy and their implications for financial services. Panel discussions addressed economic pressures in British Columbia, including rising living costs, unemployment, housing challenges and the effects of U.S. tariffs, and a housing session examined weakening demand, rising inventory, falling prices and rents, and policy options under scrutiny. A regulator discussion with Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) and BCFSA focused on how oversight can support innovation, strengthen public trust, protect consumers and manage cross-sector risks.
